JEAN’S JEWELS | SAVE OUR (WINTER) SKIN
Cold temperatures, fierce winds, low humidity, heaters, and hot showers. Here’s how to fight back.
Peels, microdermabrasion, and paraffin facials slough off dry, dead surface skin cells and help reveal fresh, new, more moisture-rich cells – so these treatments become even more essential in winter. At home tretinoin cream further accelerates cell turnover.
Serums can be more effective in delivering moisture to the skin than traditional moisturizers. Smaller molecules allowing them to penetrate deeper, hydrating more intensely and thoroughly. Layer on under your moisturizer.
Look for these two key ingredients in a moisturizer: Emollients and humectants. Here’s how to find them.
Emollients fill in the tiny crevices between surface cells that are almost ready to be shed, so skin stays smooth, soft, and pliable. On the ingredients list, look for one or more of these words: lanolin, jojoba oil, isopropyl palmitate, propylene glycol linoleate, squalene, and glycerol stearates.
Humectants draw water to the outermost skin layer, which gives it a healthy, dewy glow. On the ingredients list, look for one or more of these words: hyaluronic acid, alpha-hydroxy acids, sorbitol, glycerin, propylene glycerol, urea and sodium lactate.
Yep, even in winter. Don’t count on clouds to filter out the sun’s harmful UVA rays which are constant all year long. Even Fluorescent lights emit ultraviolet radiation causing skin damage. To prevent dry skin and wrinkles, use a double-duty moisturizer that contains a broad-spectrum SPF of at least 30.
Water…And More Water
Stay hydrated on the inside to avoid dry and chapped skin. The recommended amount of water to drink daily is two quarts – something you should aim for everyday.
Avoid Hot Showers
That hot water feels great but it softens the natural oils in your skin and allows them to wash away, leaving skin dry and flaky. Even dialing back the temperature slightly will have your skin thanking you.
Don’t assume any old lip balm will do. Some actually contain ingredients that have a drying effect. Avoid mineral oil, which creates a film on lips that fools skin into thinking it can stop producing its own oils. Products with added colors, flavors, and fragrances also can cause drying and irritation. Look for ingredients like shea butter and vitamin E.
Sleep on Silk
Silk fabrics are a lot less irritating and drying to your skin and hair than cotton Switch your current pillow case for a silk one that will be a little kinder to your face.
